Wout Weghorst is beginning to really settle in as a Manchester United player. His first goal will do him the world of good.
The on loan striker netted his opening goal as a Red Devils player in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win over Nottingham Forest.
The Netherlands international was quickest to react to the rebound from Antony’s shot, and struck his own effort first time into the net.
His goal came at a crucial moment, doubling United’s lead just before half-time, killing off Forest’s hope of a revival. United went on to win the match 3-0, with one foot firmly planted in the final.Ten Hag on Weghorst
Erik ten Hag told the club website that Weghorst’s presence helped United to create opportunities.
He said: “I know this is what he is capable of. He has a really good goalscoring record but I think we created some more, really good chances.
“Also, I think on the right side there was a good action from Antony and he [Wout] was on the rebound. It was a real striker’s goal and therefore we got it.”
As a centre-forward, Weghorst gives United shape, leading the line well without getting dragged wide, and his work rate and movement are excellent.
His distribution was also perfect, with the striker completing 100 per cent of his passes, 20 of 20 attempted.
He had three shots at goal, scoring with the only one on target, with one wide and another blocked.
Weghorst won two of three duels contested, and drew one foul, playing 85 minutes before being replaced by Anthony Elanga.
It has been a busier start than Weghorst may have expected after Anthony Martial’s injury, and his goal showed signs he is beginning to settle in.
