Jewelry Bonney’s new ability in Chapter 1072 may have finally shown what puts her on par with the rest of the Worst Generation strength-wise.
For a while, there’s been a question as to just what makes Jewelry Bonney so strong by One Piece standards. Her power to age and de-age people is certainly something to be wary of, but it didn’t seem like anything that would put her on the same level as the rest of the Worst Generation. If there was anything about this girl that could earn her a bounty of 320 million Berries, it wasn’t obvious.
Now, however, an additional facet of Bonney’s power has been introduced. It’s an aspect of her power that she can use to give herself a power boost. It’s only temporary, but depending on how strong she can make herself, it could be the thing that gives her a much-needed edge in combat.
How Does Jewelry Bonney’s New Power Work?
Bonney’s new technique was featured in Chapter 1072, “The Weight of Memory.” By aging herself into a “Distorted Future,” she can give her body characteristics that would normally be the result of certain experiences. The “distortion” implies that the target could end up in a certain state depending on their life choices.
This technique was alluded to in Chapter 1064, “Egghead Labophase.” Here, Bonney managed to age Monkey D. Luffy into a possible version of his 70-year-old self. At the time, it seemed like a simple reference to Eiichiro Oda’s tendency to draw possible futures in the One Piece SBS, but now it’s apparent that there’s a greater meaning behind it.
When Bonney used this technique on herself, she aged herself into a future where she was ridiculously buff. This is likely meant to represent a future where she trained her body to attain excessive levels of physical strength. It might even represent a timeline where she’s been undergoing this kind of training since she was a child. However she got this power, it’s much greater than anything she has on the current timeline.
What makes this technique so potentially devastating is the nature of One Piece. The series is a traditional battle shonen, so characters can continue growing exponentially powerful as long as they train hard enough. This means that, in theory, Bonney could age herself into a timeline where she trained even harder and got even stronger. Even if Bonney ages herself to what’s supposed to be her physical prime, the amount of power that might give her could be unfathomable.
Does Bonney’s New Power Make Her As Strong As the Other Worst Generation Members?
Of course, the true potential of Bonney’s distorted future is still a little hard to predict. As of Chapter 1072, only one brief demonstration of it is present in the series and it didn’t make Bonney out to be particularly powerful. On top of that, only brief use of it was enough to wear her out. At the same time, however, this could just be the tip of the iceberg precisely because it’s such a brief example.
At the very least, this strength boost would explain what puts her on par with some of her Worst Generation contemporaries. On the low end, this might put her on par with the likes of Basil Hawkins or Scratchmen Apoo. Depending on the upper limits of her potential, she might even come close to the likes of Capone Bege or Urouge. Anything above Killer or Zoro’s level might be a stretch, but, again, shonen training can go a long way. As far as physicality goes, Bonney’s future is literally what she makes of it.
