Sky Sports pundit Laura Hunter was surprised by Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah today, as he wasted a chance through on goal against Brighton.
Speaking on commentary for Sky at the Amex Stadium, the reporter was underwhelmed by the 30-year-old’s performance, claiming the Egyptian from a few seasons ago would have been more clinical in the final third.
This was particularly the case when Harvey Elliott threaded a beautifully weighted ball through to the winger, who dragged the shot wide of the far corner.
“No flag. Salah of old tucks that in the far corner,” Hunter said.
“He’s well capable. Uncharacteristically poor finish.”
Despite this, Salah was involved for the Reds’ only goal of the game, setting up Elliott who calmly finished to put Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead.Salah doesn’t look clinical
Although he has still played a huge part in Liverpool’s season thus far, Salah certainly hasn’t been at his best this term.
In 19 Premier League appearances, the attacker has only scored seven goals for the Reds. This is uncharacteristically low for Salah, whose lowest total in the division comes in at 19 for the 2019/20 season.
Klopp’s men have always relied on the ‘Egyptian king’ for goals; however, this has not been the case this year.
Although his record has been far stronger in the Champions League, Liverpool have looked their worst domestically.
As Hunter says, the Salah of old would have finished Elliott’s pass off easily. These sorts of chances haven’t gone his way recently, and it really has had a big effect on the Reds’ record.
Hopefully the 30-year-old can get back firing like he used to, as he is absolutely crucial to any sort of success Liverpool has and will have.
