Steve Nicol has questioned ‘what’s wrong with this guy’ after he found out that former Liverpool striker Divock Origi is still on the bench at his new club, AC Milan, as he told ESPN.
The Liverpool legend asked ‘does he have the record for getting benched?’ because he spent a fair bit of time as a substitute during his days at Anfield.
Under Jurgen Klopp, the 27-year-old was a bit-part player, who produced a number of memorable and legendary moments for the Merseyside giants.
From his goals during that epic comeback against Barcelona to scoring the winning goal against Everton, he is a player that will always be a favourite for those Liverpool supporters.
But he was never a starter, that’s why he eventually left for nothing, in order to earn regular starts, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.
Since that summer move, Origi has only started four Serie A matches, scoring two goals, with Nicol questioning why he can’t seem to get a run of matches.
“Can I just say something, when Don (Hutchison) was talking about Milan and he said ‘Origi is on the bench’,” said Nicol. “I mean, seriously?! What is wrong with this guy?!
“Does he just like being on the bench everywhere he goes? He’s on the bench for Belgium, he’s on the bench for Liverpool and now he’s on the bench for Milan. Does he just like being on the bench?!
“Phil Neal has the record for consecutive appearances. Does he have the record for getting benched?!”
LIVERPOOL AND ORIGI MADE THE RIGHT CALL
Back in the summer, the Reds made the right call to allow Origi to leave because he was never going to become that regular starter at Anfield.
His status at the club will always be legendary, but sympathy has to go out of the window when making those big calls.
Added to that, for the striker’s own progression, he needed to move and he made the right call to join the Serie A champions, but at this moment in time, it’s not exactly going to plan.
