Real Madrid’s squad depth has been questioned since the start of the season and we are seeing them struggle right now. Several key players have had to spend time on the sidelines due to respective injury problems. Yet, the club decided against bringing in any reinforcements in January. That has meant that Carlo Ancelotti has had to come up with innovative solutions and often play people out of position.
Eduardo Camavinga was never known as a left-back. And yet, he has been playing there for Real Madrid, and doing a good job at it as well.
In the previous two matches, Camavinga has featured at left-back and played the entire 90 minutes on both occasions. He has not looked out of place either, as Real Madrid kept clean sheets in both those games, which have been a rarity for them this season.
Despite earning a lot of plaudits for his performances at left-back, it looks like Camavinga does not like playing there. As reported by GOAL, Ancelotti said in a post-match conference:
“He has surprised us all as a left-back. I’m liking him a lot. Alaba returns on Sunday, we’ll see. The team suffers less behind because he works well.
“He has played very little in this position, but he creates a lot of danger in the opposite field. And he also has defensive work. He doesn’t like it, but we do.”
Ancelotti admits Real Madrid star does not like new role
With Ferland Mendy out injured for a while, and Alaba returning from a long spell out as well, it would not be a surprise if Camavinga plays at left-back in the future as well.
While the Frenchman might not like the role, one has to admit that he has done a tremendous job there and this might be his opportunity to nail down his spot in the team.
Of course, his long-term future does not lie at left-back, but versatility can go a long way, especially in a team that is lacking options and does not have a lot of depth.
Camavinga struggled for playing time in the first half of the season. But he is getting it now, and the youngster should make the most of every minute he gets, no matter in what position it is.
