Fans question why a poster for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece depicts Monkey D. Luffy wearing shoes instead of his typical sandals.
Fans have questioned Luffy’s choice of footwear in the poster for the live-action One Piece.
On Twitter, one fan posted a screenshot of Emily Rudd answering a question about why the poster depicts Luffy wearing shoes instead of his typical sandals in the anime. Rudd, who plays Nami in Netflix’s adaptation, attributes the fashion decision to the level of stunt work the cast performs in One Piece. “Sandals unfortunately are not the safest footwear to do stunt work in, and we didn’t want ya’ll to miss out on the amazing work @inakigo can do and did,” Rudd wrote. The user she references is Iñaki Godoy, who portrays the lead character of Monkey D. Luffy.

On Jan. 31, Netflix officially announced that its live-action One Piece series would premiere sometime in 2023. Alongside the confirmed release date, the streaming service debuted a first look at Luffy and the Straw Hats in front of the crew’s ship, The Going Merry. While fans first heard about Netflix’s plans for the long-running adventure series in 2020, the platform didn’t unveil the cast until a year later. In addition to Godoy and Rudd, Mackenyu (Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter Part 1) stars as Roronoa Zoro, Jacob Gibson as Usopp, Taz Skylar (Boiling Point) as Sanji and Peter Gadiot (Queen of the South) as Red-Haired Shanks.
Even Halloween Ends star Jamie Lee Curtis addressed fans’ hopes for her to star in the live-action version as Kureha. “Let’s see how the first season… have they made the first season? I’m gonna hold back,” she said while giving a side-eye to the camera. As a self-proclaimed One Piece fan, Curtis revealed that she tracked down Brina Palencia, the voice actor of Tony Tony Chopper, to record the outgoing voice message on her daughter Ruby Guest’s phone as a birthday present. Curtis and Palencia became friends, and the voice actor later appeared on her podcast.
Besides the hype surrounding Netflix’s take on Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, the franchise has had tremendous success with its recent film installment. In fact, Toei Animation earned around $246 million at the box office from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022, with the tremendous popularity of One Piece Film: Red and The First Slam Dunk. The studio’s previous record was $135 million in 2009. Throughout 2022, Toei sold a staggering 23,646,555 tickets.
One Piece Film: Red marks the fifteenth feature-length movie entry since the franchise’s inception. The film follows the Straw Hat Pirates and their voyage to the Island of Music. After arriving, they encounter popstar Uta, the estranged daughter of Red-Haired Shanks and Luffy’s childhood friend.
The One Piece anime series is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll. The manga is available in English on VIZ Media. The Netflix adaptation will arrive in 2023.
