One Piece recently revealed that an important character from Robin’s past is still alive. However, how did he manage to survive?
One Piece is well-known for having several mysteries and plot twists. Nico Robin is a fan-favorite character because of her tragic past and her charismatic character design. It was bad enough that she was ostracized by other kids on her island due to her devil fruit powers and being abandoned by her mother. However, the World Government ordered a Buster Call once they learned of the people in Ohara researching about the Void Century. As a result, Robin lost her home as well as everyone she cared about.
That includes Jaguar D. Saul, a former Vice Admiral, who was Robin’s first and only friend at that time. Despite the racial and age boundaries, the two bonded strongly, and Saul taught Robin about learning to accept herself. In fact, the very reason that Saul was in Ohara in the first place was because of Robin’s mother, Olivia. He was aware of the Buster Call that had been issued and was assigned to carry out the mission along with the other four Vice Admirals.
How Did Saul Survive and Where Is He Now?
Despite Saul’s orders, he left his post and went to Ohara to ensure Robin’s safety as he had promised Olivia. Sadly, when the Buster Call happened, Saul also lost his life in tragedy after making sure that Aokiji helped Robin escape — or at least, that’s what Eiichiro Oda told fans in Robin’s backstory, making it more tragic than ever. However, the manga recently revealed that Jaguar D. Saul somehow survived the Buster Call that destroyed the island and everyone in it.
In one of the recent chapters of the manga, Vegapunk revealed to Robin and the rest of the Straw Hats that Saul is still alive. He was severely injured in the attack, and fans were shown a flashback of the giant covered in bandages. During the attack, Aokiji trapped Saul in an ice prison before letting Robin escape. Once the Marines left the island, Saul somehow managed to free himself from the Aokiji’s ice. Given how he and Aokiji were friends before Saul left the Marines, it wouldn’t be surprising if the former had deliberately gone easy on the giant, giving him a way out.

Saul later snuck back into the island with a group of giants to take back whatever information had remained about the Poneglyphs or the Void Century. Saul then went into hiding and started researching on his own to make sure that the “Will of Ohara” lives on. He then relayed whatever knowledge he had to Vegapunk who, in turn, started walking down the same path as Ohara to discover the truth of the Void Century. Vegapunk is an extremely curious person; he took everything Ohara uncovered about the world’s secrets and committed it to memory.
Does Saul Reunite With Robin?
Robin was certainly happy to know that her old friend that she believed to be dead is still alive. She was moved to tears and thanked Vegapunk for not letting Ohara’s sacrifice be in vain. Robin and Saul are yet to reunite, but this will surely happen at some point. Oda has been hinting that Saul has an important role to play in future events; therefore, Saul will most like meet Robin along with the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates.
