The future of the forward line could depend on the tie with Bayern Munich
PSG are going through an extremely delicate moment, but the big test for the French side will be the Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich.
Christophe Galtier‘s side are in a difficult moment ahead of the first leg on Tuesday 14 February at the Parc des Princes and the return leg on 8 March in Germany.
With Kylian Mbappe ruled out, barring a miracle, and Messi in doubt at the last minute, what no one can doubt is that PSG’s elimination once again in the last 16 would send shockwaves through the Parisian club, which was uniquely designed to win the Champions League.
That is why even many analysts of the French side are pondering what the future of the trident of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar would be if another painful defeat were to come at this stage of the Champions League, as happened a year ago against Real Madrid.
This project with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe is designed to take the Champions League by storm. For the moment, Messi has not responded to the renewal offer he has from PSG, while Mbappe renewed precisely to try to win the ultimate continental trophy. Neymar, meanwhile, has a contract until 2025, but has also been heavily criticized in the French press for underperforming.
After recent results, the PSG project has been called into question and another failure could be the final straw for a trident that faces its second season with the need to be the kings of Europe, as for Galtier and his team, winning the French league is not enough of a prize. That is why everything will depend on what happens against Bayern, who want to take advantage of the French side’s poor form.
Virus strikes PSG just three days ahead of Bayern Munich game
Several senior players have been reportedly vomiting
Bad luck has been plaguing PSG for the whole of 2023. After a difficult return to normality after the World Cup and a series of injuries, it is now a virus that is disrupting Christophe Galtier‘s side’s preparations for the game against Monaco on Saturday, although the larger concern is related to the midweek clash with Bayern Munich.
RMC Sport reports that there is a virus circulating in the PSG dressing room that could affect the French coach’s line-up against Monaco. Several players have been vomiting, have stomach aches and are suffering from general fatigue. These problems are coming at the worst time for the Ligue 1 leaders.
Their domestic form hasn’t been overly impressive of late, and Monaco are a team that have consistently caused them problems in recent years.
The Parisian delegation has arrived in the south of France, staying between Nice and Monaco. RMC reported on Saturday morning that some players are suffering from an intestinal virus.
The extent of this includes the aforementioned vomiting, stomach pains and fatigue. The severity of the virus is not yet known, but Galtier could be forced to modify his starting XI, as well as reshaping his plans for the Champions League clash with the German champions.
