The latest issue of Poison Ivy suggests that Ivy’s about to get all of her powers back—and that could mean a big change for the DC Universe. Poison Ivy has been struggling, physically and emotionally, without her connection to the Green, but Harley Quinn shows her that maybe Ivy isn’t as disconnected as she once thought.
For most of her contemporary history, Poison Ivy’s power source has come from her connection to the Green, the supernatural source of all things natural and growing, including other DC characters like Swamp Thing. But Ivy’s connection to the Green was severed, and she was severely de-powered after the events of the major Batman story Fear State. It seemed as though she wouldn’t be able to control plants or use her typical poison-touch powers. Since then, Poison Ivy has left Gotham on a cross-country road trip in a last ditch attempt to destroy humanity, using a warped version of her abilities to spread deadly fungal spores across the country. Though her trip has completely changed her attitude towards humanity, Ivy doesn’t see any hope for resuscitating her normal powers—until Harley Quinn shows her the truth, of course.
Harley Quinn Proves There’s Hope for Poison Ivy’s Powers to Return
Harley Quinn reunites with Poison Ivy—and proves Ivy’s powers are still present within her—in Poison Ivy #9 by G. Willow Wilson, Marcio Takara, Arif Prianto, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. As Ivy is lamenting the loss of her connection to the Green, Harley interrupts her with proof to the contrary, telling Ivy that she never lost her powers in the first place. Harley shows Ivy a picture from her own road trip in Pam’s footsteps: Harley found the motel where Ivy helped to plant a garden a few issues previously. The garden is in full, Ivy-powered bloom: something unmistakably super-powered. As Harley then suggests: “An’ is it possible your regular-schmegular powers can grow back? Like, you know… a plant?”
Poison Ivy has long been one of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe, especially when she sets her sights on truly lofty goals. When she was at full power before her character-defining solo series, she often used her abilities for nefarious ends: mind control, death, the end of humanity. But Ivy has recently had a change of heart, and now she’s more akin to a true anti-hero than an out-and-out villain. If she really does get her “regular-schmegular” powers and connection to the Green back, it’s likely she’ll use her reignited abilities to protect humanity rather than harm it—even if that means killing a few power-hungry CEOs along the way. The DC Universe would truly never be the same again if and when Poison Ivy can work at that level once again.
Will Poison Ivy Use Her Connection to the Green to Protect Humanity?
Only time will tell how Poison Ivy will use her rekindled powers, and luckily fans will have that time now that Poison Ivy has been promoted from a miniseries to an ongoing title. Even over the course of the last year, Ivy has made a huge impact without access to her normal powers. Everything in the DC Universe will change once she has those powers back.
