Kylian Mbappe is the face of Paris Saint-Germain despite having Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. on the squad. The capital club felt the presence of Mbappe against Bayern Munich last Tuesday as soon as he came onto the pitch in the second half.
While the 24-year-old is the marquee player, former PSG player Angel Di Maria noted the importance that Mbappe has at the club even with the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner on the squad.
“There is no other player that has made such a big difference,” Di Maria told ESPN Argentina. “France didn’t have a team like they did when Karim [Benzema], Paul [Pogba] and [N’Golo] Kanté were there. Many players had been injured. PSG and the president gave him all the responsibility, they made him stay when he could leave and they gave him that important burden so that he could go and nobody else.
“[PSG] gave him all that power [to Mbappé] having the best of the history. It is difficult to counter that, but they gave him that strength because he is French, he came out of there, he won the World Cup, and he has a whole career ahead of him.”
The French giants held off Real Madrid for Mbappe as the Spanish club wanted to land Mbappe as the centerpiece of their club now that Cristiano Ronaldo has moved on and Karim Benzema is near the end of his career.
Nonetheless, Mbappe chose to remain in his hometown as he attempts to give PSG the trophy they long crave, the UEFA Champions League. As a result, it is no surprise that they conceded the keys to the club to the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner.
