With the DC universe finally heading towards a cohesive narrative under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, Dwayne Johnson’s dream of starring at the center of the DC universe has lost into obscurity. But it appears that before Gunn and Safran took over the DC universe, the people’s champion had very big ambitions for the universe.
It appears that Johnson not only wanted to be the main attraction of the DC universe, but the actor also wanted to lead a DC vs Marvel crossover, which might explain his reason for bringing back Henry Cavill’s Superman in Black Adam.
Dwayne Johnson’s Black AdamDwayne Johnson wanted to lead a DC vs Marvel crossover
Apart from reshaping the DC universe that would have revolved around his Black Adam, The Rock also wanted to lead a crossover between the two comic book giants, DC and Marvel. And while promoting Netflix’s Red Notice, which starred The Rock, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot at its forefront, Johnson expressed the idea of leading an epic DC vs Marvel crossover. He stated,
“I think there’s a crossover with Black Adam [and] Wonder Woman. But what we were just talking about today, I turned to Ryan [Reynolds] and Gal [Gadot] and I said there should be a crossover between Marvel and the DC Universe. We can be the ones to possibly make it happen. So, we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”
And his desire of leading an epic crossover even before the release of Black Adam might explain his decision to bring back Henry Cavill, who could have led the Justice League with The Rock at its core to fight MCU heroes. But even before he could forward on his quest to bring the idea to life, Cavill was eventually shown the exit by DC, and Johnson’s Black Adam was sidelined following James Gunn’s entry at the office.
Dwayne Johnson and Henry CavillDwayne Johnson’s future in the new DCU remains uncertain
Despite believing that he could bring a Marvel vs DC crossover to life, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was soon sidelined after its disastrous performance at the box office and the duo of Gunn and Safran were hired to rebuild the universe. And with James Gunn adamant about building a cohesive DCU moving forward, Teth-Adam’s place in the new universe is still under question.

Even though The Rock has previously commended Gunn for his vision for the DC universe, it seems that the Brahma Bull is still open to returning to the DCU if asked. And although it will be a while (if ever) before we witness The Rock in the role of Teth-Adam, his ambitious plans of bringing a DC vs Marvel crossover seem to have lost into obscurity.
Black Adam is available to stream on HBO Max.
