The crossbreed, called Sophie, was discovered on the UC Santa Barbara campus in California on Thursday, but had been seen on site three days earlier
Emergency services were forced to launch a desperate rescue operation to save a beloved pet that had been stuck in a sewer for days on end.
The crossbreed, called Sophie, had been missing from her home for nearly a month, when emergency services returned the pup to her owner.
Sophie was discovered on the UC Santa Barbara campus in California on Thursday, after a passerby heard barking below ground.
Firefighters managed to coax the dog to the surface of an 18-inch pipe, using a hose to reach down into the pipe to retrieve it from the sewer.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department said the operation lasted around 20 minutes, and the dog emerged dirty but otherwise, healthy.
In an Instagram post, the department said the dog had been spotted on campus three days before, and estimated it had been stuck in the pipe for three days.
The SBCFD said: “It took SBC about 20 minutes to rescue Sophie, a 2 yr old mix, that had been in a 18” drainpipe for three days on the UC Santa Barbara campus.
“FF’s used a hose line to coax the dog to another awaiting FF and was brought to the surface.”

Alongside the image, the department posted a picture of Sophie as she emerged from the gaping hole in the ground.
The post has since gained 475 likes and hundred of comments from social media users thanking firefighters for their service.
One said: “Thank you so much for saving this baby girl.”
A second added: “Thank you Santa Barbara County Fire for showing compassion for our canine family as you do our human ones.”
