Celebrities aren’t the only ones using the method known as ‘vocal fry’ in their speech – dolphins also use a similar technique to communicate while hunting their next meal
Britney made the method famous with her hit song ‘baby one more time’
Dolphins hunt fish by communicating in husky tones that resemble the voices of Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian.
Known as “vocal fry” in humans, the technique produces the lowest sounds by dragging out syllables.
Britney fuelled the craze by using it in her pronunciation of her debut hit Baby One More Time.
And now the vocal fry has been identified in dolphins and killer whales, who use a similar vocal method during hunting.
Their ultrasonic echolocation clicks help them find, track and catch prey.

Prof Coen Elemans, of the University of Southern Denmark, said: “Vocal fry is a normal voice register that is often used in American English.
“Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Scarlett Johansson are well-known people using this register.”

The drawl is common in California and has been picked up around the world thanks to the popularity of American culture.
The Kardashians are infamous for their use of vocal fry
Experts have suggested that women use the deeper tones to seem more masculine and better equipped to take on men in the workplace.
Others have described the technique as potentially “vocally damaging” as it can cause laryngeal tension and voice fatigue.
Prof Elemans added: “While vocal fry may be controversial in humans and may be perceived as everything from annoying to authoritative, it made toothed whales an evolutionary success story.”
