This 2009 Ducati 1098R Bayliss Limited Edition is #77 of 500 built to honor three-time World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss, and it was acquired new by the current owner in March 2009. It is finished in a red, white, and blue livery over a red trellis frame and is powered by a 1,198cc desmodromic L-twin mated to a six-speed transmission. Features include a carbon-fiber front fender, traction control, forged Marchesini wheels, Öhlins suspension, triple disc brakes with Brembo calipers, and digital instrumentation with data analyzer software. The bike has been modified with a tinted windscreen, a Termignoni exhaust system with carbon-fiber mufflers, and Ducati Performance items including an alarm system, a racing clutch cover, and a fuel tank protector. The timing belts were replaced in 2014. This 1098R shows 2,400 miles and is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with manufacturer’s literature, a Ducati bike cover, a rear axle stand, a numbered commemorative plaque, a data analyzer disc, a removed Akrapovič exhaust system, and a clean Pennsylvania title in the owner’s name.
The bodywork wears an Aldo Drudi-designed red, white, and blue #21 livery that pays homage to the Ducati ridden by Troy Bayliss in his final race. Equipment includes a red-finished frame, a monoposto tail section with a two-piece seat, and a carbon-fiber front fender and exhaust heat shields as well as fairing-mounted mirrors, an aftermarket license plate and turn signal bracket, and a tinted windscreen. Photos show a tear in the vinyl applique graphics on the right-side fairing.
Forged 17″ Marchesini wheels are finished in black and were mounted with 120/70 front and 190/55 rear Pirelli Diablo SuperCorsa tires in 2014. Adjustable Öhlins suspension consists of a 43mm inverted fork as well as a piggyback monoshock mounted to a single-sided swingarm. Stopping power is provided by radially mounted four-piston Brembo calipers mounted over a pair of floating drilled rotors up front as well as a single two-piston Brembo caliper mounted over a drilled disc at the rear. The brake fluid was flushed in April 2018.
The bike is equipped with an Öhlins steering damper along with clip-on handlebars featuring control switches and Brembo brake and clutch master cylinders. Digital instrumentation includes a speedometer, a bar-graph tachometer, selectable data readouts, and traction control indicators. The Ducati Data Analyzer allows for logging trip or track data on a personal computer. The digital odometer shows 2,400 miles.
The upper triple clamp bears a numbered plaque that denotes the bike as #077 of 500 1098R Bayliss examples produced.
The 1,198cc Testastretta Evoluzione L-twin in the R model offered more displacement and a higher compression ratio than that used in other 1098 models, and factory-rated output was 180 horsepower and 99 lb-ft of torque. The timing belts were replaced in April 2014 by EuroSports of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania. Work performed in April 2018 included replacing the battery, changing the oil, and carrying out a Pennsylvania state inspection.
Power is routed to the rear wheel through a hydraulically operated multi-disc dry slipper clutch with a Ducati Performance cover as well as a six-speed transmission and a drive chain. The clutch fluid was flushed in April 2018.
A numbered commemorative plaque will accompany the motorcycle along with manufacturer’s literature, a Ducati bike cover, a rear axle stand, a data analyzer disc, a removed Akrapovič exhaust system, and various additional removed components.
