The actress is playing the royal in the upcoming film that charts her life as she faced political mutinies in the face of her rule

MARGOT Robbie looked unrecognisable as she appeared on set as Queen Elizabeth I.

The 27-year-old was spotted wearing a balding red wig, face prosthetics and heavy white foundation as she shot her new film Mary Queen of Scots.

But while she was facially made up for the role, she was dressed down in a tracksuit as she took a break on set.

Clearly enjoying being transformed for the part, Margot smiled broadly as she clutched a notebook and pen.

The look was in stark contrast to her appearance yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival where her film I, Tonya was premiering.

The actress, who hails from Australia, looked her usual stunning self wearing a long floral maxi dress.

And reassuring fans that she hasn’t in fact shaved her head to play Queen Elizabeth, she showed off her natural hair which was worn in a bob.

Mary Queen of Scots  also stars David Tennant, Downton Abbey‘s Brendan Coyle, Dunkirk‘s Jack Lowden, Guy Pearce, Martin Compston, Joe Alwyn and Saoirse Ronan.

Margot joins a long list of accomplished actresses who have taken on the role.

Judie Dench, Bette Davis, Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett and Miranda Richardson have all previously portrayed the Tudor queen to acclaim.

The big-screen project, which is being directed by Josie Rourke and is expected to go into production this year, is based on the true story of Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth’s seat on the English throne, which, ultimately, led to her being condemned to years in prison before facing execution.

Filming began on the Working Title Films production in England and Scotland last month.

The feature film is being produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Debra Hayward. Academy Award-nominee Beau Willimon has penned the script, which is an adaptation of John Guy’s biography ‘My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots’.
