Erling Haaland has done some truly outrageous things in his debut season at Manchester City, but the unstoppable Norwegian may have just scored one of the goals of the season.
Manchester City forward Erling Haaland scored a wonderful overhead kick to take his Premier League tally up to 30 goals.
The imperious Norwegian had already opened the scoring against Southampton by getting his head onto Kevin De Bruyne’s sumptuous delivery. One thing which has been repeatedly said about Haaland’s efforts is that most of his goals have been tap-ins and rebounds.
However, his 30th Premier League goal was anything but as he leapt into the air and guided a wonderful overhead kick into the far corner. It was truly something special.
A City counterattack saw Jack Grealish get fed down the right hand side of Southampton’s back four. He checked back onto his right foot, looked up, and saw Haaland bursting in at the back post.
The in form England international’s floated cross was slightly overhit and forced Haaland to check his run. Not only did he manage to adjust his feet, he leapt up in the air and connected with a stupendous overhead kick, leaving Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu with no chance.
How many goals do you think Erling Haaland could score this season?
Haaland then sealed his goal with his trademark meditation celebration. City were already winning 2-0 against a battling Saints side, but the wondergoal ensured the points were heading back to the blue side of Manchester.
The ex-Borussia Dortmund hitman put Pep Guardiola’s side into the lead in the first half, by peeling off at the back post and nodding De Bruyne’s outswinging cross past Bazunu from close range.
In the second half, De Bruyne then put Grealish through on goal with a defence splitting pass. After his first attempt was saved, the former Aston Villa captain stabbed in the rebound from close range.
Haaland is now only four goals away from Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s joint record of 34 goals in a single Premier League campaign. He will surely have his eye on joining that illustrious group of legends.
