Harvey Elliott claims his family helped convince him to join Liverpool over Real Madrid

Harvey Elliott has revealed his family supporting Liverpool had been influential in convincing him to join the club in 2019, despite having been close to a move to Real Madrid.

Elliott signed for Liverpool as a 16-year-old from Fulham, after making two substitute appearances for the Cottagers.

The midfielder had previously revealed he had been given a tour of the Bernabeu when Real Madrid were in talks to sign him from Fulham.

Elliott claimed he had turned down the chance to meet then Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, after the defender had injured Mohamed Salah in the Champions League final in 2018.

The lifelong Liverpool fan, had travelled to Kiev to watch the Reds in the Champions League final against Madrid.

The 20-year-old was asked about Real Madrid’s interest on the We Are Liverpool podcast, with Elliott revealing his family were key to convincing him to join the Reds.

‘I was close to going to Madrid and then I think Liverpool came in,’ Elliot said. ‘And as soon as I heard they had come in, that was it. My heart was set on it, just because of being a Liverpool fan, all the family.

‘It was my dad’s dream to play for Liverpool himself, but he didn’t quite make it in that way.

‘My little brother as well is a massive Liverpool supporter, probably one of the biggest I’ve ever seen in my life, he’s always coming to me with information that I didn’t even know.

‘Something that also played a big part was my brother and sister, moving them around, it is a new culture and different language and they were at such a young age as well.

‘Settling in for me wasn’t the problem, it was just about my family and I just wanted them to be happy as much as anything.’

Elliott joined Liverpool from Fulham for £1.5million, before enjoying a productive loan spell with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

The midfielder has become a first team regular for Liverpool throughout this campaign, having fought back from suffering a dislocated ankle at the start of last season.

Elliott has featured in 41 matches for Liverpool during the season, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

The Reds have struggled on the pitch this season with Jurgen Klopp’s side lying eighth in the Premier League, while they were eliminated from each of the cup competitions.
