Chelsea were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, but fans think the deficit should’ve been smaller after Kepa Arrizabalaga’s blunder

Chelsea fans are demanding the club sell Kepa Arrizabalaga after the Spaniard added another blunder to his seemingly never-ending highlight heel during Wednesday night’s defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Karim Benzema gave the La Liga giants the lead in the first half, and things went from bad to worse when Ben Chilwell got himself sent off just before the hour mark, but the game, and possibly the tie, was sealed when Marco Asensio netted Madrid’s second goal just a few minutes later from the edge of the area.

Blues fans were furious with Kepa, who failed to keep the shot out after palming the ball onto the post and into the net, and although it wasn’t the ugliest of howlers, many on social media said they felt that enough was enough.

“How have we still got Kepa as our No 1 when he keeps letting easy shots in like this every week. He’s been here five years how have we not worked this out yet?” one supporter tweeted.

Another fumed: “Kepa is the worst goalkeeper in the history of our club, sell him for £5m and hope his fanboys leave with him,” while a third said: “People who defend Kepa must have short arms themselves. Holy s*** do we need a new GK.”

Fortunately (if that’s the right word) for the 28-year-old he wasn’t the only one in the firing line. His compatriot Marc Cucurella sparked similar fury in the fanbase after getting caught out just minutes after coming on as substitute – a gaffe that led to Chilwell’s red card.

One fan tweeted: “I don’t think people realize how incredible it is for Chelsea to have Kepa and Cucurella in the same team. Both have a genuine shout towards being the worst signing in PL history and they’re team-mates. Never seen it before. At least there’s something funny amidst all this.”

If Frank Lampard’s side want to book their place in the semi-finals they’ll have to beat Madrid by at least two goals at Stamford Bridge next week. A tough ask, but stranger have things have happened to Chelsea in the Champions League.
