Harry Maguire appeared to tell Man United team-mate David de Gea to shut up during a tense exchange after the pair linked up to gift Sevilla a goal in the Europa League quarter final.
Fans spotted Harry Maguire telling David de Gea ‘shut up’ after their Manchester United horror show against Sevilla.
The United pair combined to gift Sevilla the opening goal in the Europa League quarter-final second round. Maguire squandered possession after being passed the ball by de Gea, prompting Sevilla ace Youssef En-Nesyri to pounce on the error and strike home.
De Gea was visibly upset with Maguire after his mistake and let the defender know how he was feeling in a tense exchange. But Maguire was having none of it and fans suggested he was telling his team-mate to be quiet as they traded words.
Maguire seemingly used his hand to gesture to De Gea that he was talking too much. And De Gea raised his arms in protest amid the hostile scene.
Fans were left in shock by the debacle and resorted to social media to share their frustration. One fan raged in regards to Maguire’s petulance: “He must leave!!!.”
A second supporter sarcastically mused: “Good example from a supposed Captain!! Maguire sucks!!. Then another user scoffed: “gimme contract man utd… I’m play better than Maguire…just pay me $100 a week.
However, in Maguire’s defence, a fourth user insisted: “Looks like Maguire is finally taking charge of the defence!.” Followed by a fifth person who commented: “Lies. He was telling De Gea to communicate.”
Some supporters believe it will be one of the last mistakes Maguire will make in a Man United shirt as he was already on thin ice with boss Erik ten Hag.
Maguire’s gaffe came just a week after his own goal helped Sevilla seal a 2-2 draw against the Red Devils in the first leg. And his blooper was all the more painful as he came on as a late sub for the injured Lisandro Martinez who had to be carried off.
And things got worst for Maguire and Man United on the night as Sevilla romped to a 3-0 victory. The nightmare result meant United’s European campaign came crashing to an end as they lost the clash 5-2 on aggregate.
