Tom Cruise has an astronomical contribution in bringing back the audiences in the post-pandemic era. Following the worldwide lockdown, there had been a steady decline in theater-going audiences but stars like Cruise proved that event films can still bring back theater audiences. While everything was going well, some statements by the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame director duo Anthony and Joe Russo raised a buzz on the internet.
The Russo Brothers
During the recent few days, Twitter has witnessed Tom Cruise fans going against the Russo Brothers. The reason for this is an interview where the directors passed a comment on the ‘Death of Movie Stars’ which didn’t sit too well among the cinephile netizens.
Why are Tom Cruise fans disappointed with the Russo Brothers?
The Russo Brothers with Marvel Studios’ Kevin Fiege
It is not the first time when the Captain America: Civil War directors spoke on the condition of the theaters. They have often spoken about the theaters’ future being uncertain. During an interview with Variety, the filmmakers also stated how the theaters are an old-fashioned medium.
“I’m just telling you what I see, as a guy who has been in this business for 25 years. I don’t know that the market is going to be able to support art-house films the way that it did in the past.”
They even released their highly anticipated action flick The Grey Man on Netflix after a very short period of selected theater run. Although they claimed that they made the movie for a theater experience, they justified the lack of interest by modern audiences to go to the theaters. But recently during the Sands Internation Film Festival, they voiced some more opinions on movie stars and theaters.
“We’re in a post-movie star era except for maybe Tom Cruise.”
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick
While they accredited Tom Cruise and his Top Gun: Maverick success for bringing back audiences to the theater, the fans were not so delightful. They bashed the directors that the duo spoke on the death of theaters earlier but changed their tone soon after Top Gun: Maverick saved Hollywood. This created full-fledged chaos on Twitter where the fans didn’t leave any chance to speak against the AGBO owners.
The Russo Brothers face an insane backlash
The conflict started soon after a user named @marisatomay wrote on Twitter against the directors quoting the Deadline article where they talked about Tom Cruise. The user pinpointed how Russo Brothers changed their statement about movie stars soon after Cruise’s success while they were the ones at first place to talk about the death of film theaters earlier.
Soon, this tweet was followed by several quote tweets and replies by the Mission: Impossible star’s fandom who left no chance to speak for their favorite action hero. It can be understood that the Cruise fandom wants a note of apology from the duo. Here are few reactions:
With some big titles such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning 1 and 2, it can be assured that Tom Cruise will be successful once again in bringing back the audiences to the cinemas. On the other hand, with the controversial statement by the Russos, it will be seen if it affects their upcoming Amazon series Citadel in any way.
