Last night, co-host Dua Lipa shut down the Met Gala red carpet in a black and white Chanel tweed ballgown—the exact design that Claudia Schiffer wore in the brand’s fall 1992 couture show. Turns out it was just a sign of things to come on a night that celebrated the work of Karl Lagerfeld.
After the red carpet, the singer changed into a black sheer spring 1995 lace dress that was originally worn by Stephanie Seymour both on the runway and in a campaign. And for the after-parties? Naturally, Dua opted for another Chanel look, this time a ’90s inflected, dance floor-ready combination of bike shorts and pearl-embellished heels.

Arriving at the official Met Gala after-party hosted at Sartiano’s at the Mercer Hotel, the pop superstar kept her Chanel streak going in a black and white crop top and cycling shorts from Chanel’s spring 2022 collection, worn with sheer black polka dot tights and black leather stilettos with pearled heels. Dua was swathed in the maison’s trophy accessories: layers of vintage pearl and chain necklaces, a chain logo belt, leather fingerless gloves, and black shades—all considered Karl Lagerfeld signatures.

Dua was far from the only A-lister nodding to Lagerfeld’s time at Chanel at the Met Gala. Lizzo, Gisele Bündchen, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell, Marion Cotillard, and Kristen Stewart are just a few of the celebrities who chose to wear pieces from the brand’s extensive archives. In fact, Kidman’s exquisite pink feathered Chanel Haute Couture gown was the very same one she wore in a Chanel No.5 campaign in 2004.
Dua Lipa has served as a brand ambassador for major fashion houses like Versace and Saint Laurent, but on this first Monday in May, the “Levitating” singer was a bona fide Chanel girl.
