Two years after opening an ICT Academy, a 13-year-old Nigerian girl, Emmanuella Mayaki, has gained admission into a U.S university to study Computer Science.
Of the 1,300 percentile in her Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the teenager scored 91 which got her accepted into the Programme for the Exceptionally Gifted(PEG) at Mary Baldwin University.
The school in her admission offer to Mayaki wrote; ”Dear Emmanuella, congratulations on your acceptance to the Programme for the Exceptionally Gifted(PEG) at Mary Baldwin University! Welcome to the PEG class of 2026.”
In 2020, the tech genius established an ICT Academy named ‘CodeKid’ in Abuja for girls aged 6-15.
According to her, the academy which is an after-school, weekend and holiday club was influenced by her United Kingdom (UK) after-school club experience to set up the academy.
The school provides lessons in Introduction to Computer, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Desktop Publishing, WordPress, Graphics design, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, among others such as object-oriented programming – Python and Java.

Mayaki was nominated as a STEM icon by STEM Kids New York City (NYC) in May 2022.
She also got featured in CBBC’s My Life series for International Women’s Day in the year 2021.
Also in 2021, she was nominated as a recipient in Microsoft’s Legacy Project Virtual Museum’s Women’s History Month Experience.
Mayaki has obtained certificate courses in JavaScript tutorial course, JQuery tutorial course, Logic Building, Python and Java programming.
She has also acquired certificates in HTML fundamentals course, PHP tutorial course, CSS fundamentals course and SQL fundamentals course.
Girl builds solar water purifier at 12
Similarly, a young African girl is in the news for bringing great innovation, such as a solar water purifier, to improve the welfare of her community.
The young girl, identified as Mwangala Maunga, hails from Lusaka, Zambia and currently attends Roma Girls Secondary School; she’s also a child rights advocate.
When she was only 12 years old, she invented a solar water purifier to provide clean water for dwellers in both rural and urban areas.
The prevalence of waterborne diseases in her country inspired the young girl to find a lasting solution which led her to put materials together to build her water purifier.
