Sandra Bullock Was The First Choice For Keanu Reeves’ Role
Before Keanu Reeves got cast as Neo, the Academy Award winner was offered the iconic role. In an interview with The Wrap in March 2019, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that they had approached numerous individuals and were struggling to find the right fit.
Among those considered was Sandra Bullock, who had worked with the producers on Demolition Man and was a close friend of di Bonaventura. A copy of the script was sent to her, and if she expressed interest, they would explore the possibility of altering the role accordingly. They even proposed changing the gender of the character to accommodate Bullock’s involvement.

“We went to Sandy Bullock and said, ‘We’ll change Neo to a girl.’ [Producer] Joel Silver and I worked with Sandy on Demolition Man, and she was and continues to be a very good friend of mine. It was pretty simple. We sent her the script to see if she was interested in it. And if she was interested in it, we would try to make the change.”
Despite the offer, Bullock declined the opportunity as it didn’t pique her interest at the time. “So really, it didn’t go anywhere,” di Bonaventura explained.
