A mum who decided to try for one more baby and became a parent to seven after welcoming quintuplets revealed how manic it is now they are one.
Megan Hulen, from Minot, North Dakota, and her husband Joshua were already parents to Jacob, 7 and Matthew, 2, when they decided to try for one more baby in the hope of having a little girl.

In the early morning of Sept. 2, Hulen and Joshua received their wish. Actually, they delivered four girls, plus a boy, at Sanford Medical Center Fargo. In their birth order, Allison weighed 3 pounds 5.6 ounces; Adam weighed 4 pounds 0.2 ounces; Madison weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces; Emma weighed 3 pounds 10.9 ounces; and Chloe weighed 3 pounds 3.5 ounces. Megan had dreamed of having a large family, and the addition of quintuplets certainly has made that dream come true, too.

The idea of having quintuplets required an adjustment period at first, but at 30 weeks along, a couple of weeks before their birth, she talked lightheartedly about that, along with her challenges of getting pregnant with ᴘᴏʟʏᴄʏsᴛɪᴄ ᴏᴠᴀʀʏ sʏɴᴅʀᴏᴍᴇ (PCOS), how her body was coping with sustaining five babies and why she felt so calm about her unusual situation.

Megan Hulen had been undergoing another type of ꜰᴇʀᴛɪʟɪᴛʏ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ and taking ꜰᴏʟʟɪᴄʟᴇ sᴛɪᴍᴜʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ɪɴᴊᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴs. Her doctor had advised calling off the ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ because of some issues, but Hulen ended up ovulating anyway that month and the quints were ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ. The couple were astounded to learn they had ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ the quints through natural ᴏᴠᴜʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ.

“I started to feel really weird and I thought, surely there’s no way I could be pregnant because I never actually ᴏᴠᴜʟᴀᴛᴇᴅ on my own. But the one time I did we found out we were pregnant and that was a surprise enough in itself. But then we found out that we were having five babies and nothing could have prepared us for that.”

The couple went in for an ultrasound at six weeks where they were initially told that only one ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙᴇᴀᴛ was present and it was unlikely that all five would be ᴠɪᴀʙʟᴇ. The Hulens knew, too, that it’s not uncommon to ʟᴏsᴇ a baby or two in that first trimester. Because of that and their history with ᴍɪsᴄᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇ, they kept the quintuplets a “gigantic secret.” Then at 12 weeks, Hulen’s nausea went away and they still had five babies growing.

But while the pregnancy was a slow plod, Hulen was baffled by both the speed and ease of the birth. She was admitted to Fargo hospital in Sanford at 32 weeks after doctors noticed a surge in ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ pressure, and the couple welcomed the quintuplets via ᴄ-sᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ on September 2. Within three days of giving birth Hulen was discharged despite doctors previously warning that she may require a ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ ᴛʀᴀɴsꜰᴜsɪᴏɴ due to multiple birth ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴs. And the babies themselves were born without ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴs but at 32 weeks were premature and kept in the NICU for just three weeks.

The couple are now settling into home life with their quints, admitting that it has been something of a learning process. Now they have seven children, the parents hope to move to a bigger house in the future. They are also planning to buy a bigger car with nine seats so they can drive the entire family around at once.
