Small changes to a product over its lifetime can make all the difference – just look at how many buyers get the latest smartphones each and every year. The same thinking has been applied to the Jaguar F-Pace SUV, because it’s been given a series of subtle tweaks designed to boost its appeal.
As before, the plug-in hybrid version (P400e) combines an electric motor with a 2.0-litre engine for a combined power output of 398bhp. However, it now gets a bigger battery than the existing one, and the increase from 17.1kWh to 19.2kWh has in turn increased the electric range, from an official 33 miles to up to 40 miles – which is more than the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid’s electric-only range of 30 miles.
For company car drivers, this makes the F-Pace an appealing choice due to its benefit-in-kind tax rate of 8% (previously 12%), but keep in mind that you’ll need to charge the battery regularly to avoid expensive petrol bills.
Elsewhere, two diesel engines are on offer – the 201bhp D200 and the 296bhp D300 – as well as a 395bhp petrol engine (badged the P400). Both of these come with mild hybrid electrical assistance, with the aim of lowering your fuel bills.
Our favourite engine in the current F-Pace is the D200, because it offers punchy performance and returns an official average of 45mpg.
A range-topping 542bhp 5.0-litre V8 petrol version is also available, with a top speed of 178mph and a 0-60mph time of 3.8sec, meaning it can reach motorway speeds quicker than the Porsche Macan.
No matter which version of the F-Pace you go for, you’ll get four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The interior features the same 12.3in infotainment screen seen in the current F-Pace, and our experience with this in the past has been good. The screen is easy to read and there are more physical buttons than in rivals such as the Volvo XC60, making the system easier to use on the move.
The F-Pace is kitted out with features such as wireless phone charging to make sure your phone never runs out of juice, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.
Other subtle updates include new 19in, 20in and 21in wheels on R-Dynamic SE, SE Black and HSE Black models, respectively. That’s alongside a gloss black finish on the door mirror caps and grille as standard.
Prices for the new F-Pace start from £48,660 – slightly more than the X3 and XC60, which start from £45,160 and £45,638 respectively.
