Tom Cruise had some choice words to get Emily Blunt motivated on the set of Edge of Tomorrow.
Emily Blunt made the decision to take her career in a different direction by starring in her first action film in 2014. That film was Edge of Tomorrow. The film required not only Blunt and her co-star, Tom Cruise to be involved in several serious stunts but stunts that were so difficult that men were Blunt’s stunt doubles given the weight of her costume.
As a result of how action-driven and stunt intensive the film was, the Devil Wears Prada star was understandably nervous about being thrown into the deep end right off the bat. Cruise did not help matters by telling Blunt that the film was “the deep end of action” for him given that he had been involved with so many projects that require some fairly intricate stunts. And to top it off, the costumes that both were wearing weighed in at 85 pounds making doing an action film incredibly daunting.
Blunt looked to her stunt-experienced co-star for encouraging words, but instead, she was met with anything but. And that advice has left fans wondering where the relationship stands between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt today after he insulted her on the set of Edge of Tomorrow.
The Advice Tom Cruise Gave Emily Blunt Was Anything But Inspiring
After being fitted for her costume and getting to set to shoot scenes that required action sequences, Blunt quickly realized that she was not as prepared mentally as she needed to be.
Because of this, it made The Young Victoria star second guess what she was doing. And in doing so, asked the action movie veteran, Cruise for help. But the response Blunt received was nothing like she was expecting.
In what can only be explained as extremely tough love, the Top Gun: Maverick star “stared” at Blunt “for a long time” as she began to cry at the realization of what she needed to do during an action sequence on the set.
This “panicky” feeling caused The Girl on the Train star to freeze. And in response to all of this, Cruise simply said, “Come on, stop being such a [expletive], OK?”
The comment caught Blunt “off guard.” And while it helped her to move on with the scene in the movie, some who have heard the interview feel the comment was “extremely unprofessional and horrible” and should never have been said.
It’s especially harsh since Blunt received permanent injuries from her time performing stunts on the film.
Emily Blunt Claims The Comment Was “Taken Out Of Context”
After the Smartless interview aired, the phrase Cruise uttered caused him to receive backlash.
Because this was never the intention in revealing this on-set conversation, Blunt felt the need to set the record straight with her fans and the public at large.
“It’s ludicrous that it’s being spun as something that offended me,” Blunt explained. “It didn’t. I shared the story as lightheartedly as it was meant by Tom.”
The conversation was “taken literally and absurdly out of context,” the Jungle Cruise star stated. The goal was to get Blunt out of her head so that she could focus on the role in front of her that needed to be accomplished.
While it may have not been done in the most tactful way possible, Blunt was able to complete the film. And in the process, push Blunt further than she knew was possible mentally and physically as an actress.
Emily Blunt Says Tom Cruise Is A “Dear Friend”
While they may not be photographed hanging out together, Blunt and Cruise are still close friends nearly a decade after filming Edge of Tomorrow.
“I absolutely adore Tom,” Blunt explained. “He’s a dear friend and he was a total gem to me.”The two reportedly got along so well that the A Quiet Place star invited her co-star out for a night on the town with husband, John Krasinski, Chris Hemsworth, and Matt Damon to celebrate Damon’s birthday in London.
While the night was supposed to be civilized enough, plans took a dramatic turn. And Blunt did not know how Cruise would handle it.
Wanting to make the night “special” for Damon given that he had flown into London to celebrate his birthday with friends, Krasinski decided that going to a nice dinner was not good enough.
Instead, the plan changed to go to a burlesque club. And this particular club, called The Box, was known for making audience members “cringe.”
Blunt emailed Cruise to let him know that plans had changed. She also let him know that if the club was not his idea of a good time, he was not expected to go.
Much to Blunt’s surprise, not only did Cruise want to celebrate with the crew, he even threw out an entertaining comment as his reply.
“Jesus Christ! Well just don’t let me walk out of there alone!” Cruise wrote back. A comment that gives a glimpse into the sense of humor that the Mission Impossible franchise star has. And why the comment he shot at Blunt while filming Edge of Tomorrow may have been off-putting for some but may have helped solidify the friendship between Blunt and Cruise.
