Have you ever thought that a perfectly rectangular iceberg like this is a product of nature?
Nature creates all things with many different shapes. But for the most part nothing is perfect, and most of it is asymmetrical and… crooked. For example, you will rarely see a road in the wild that has a perfect 90 degree turn.
That’s why the recently published photo by NASA made netizens boil. It was an iceberg in the Antarctic Sea, and in the midst of a drifting iceberg, it was rectangular in a perfectly perfect way, as if it had been carved by a man.
The ice is square and flat as if it was cut
Aliens appear? Or is there a certain group of people who have secretly chiseled and sharpened this ice for a reason that no one knows?
But as it turned out, this was a completely natural iceberg – that was the most unexpected thing.
Usually when we think of icebergs, we think of jagged, pointed icebergs above and expanding at the bottom. However, it is actually just one of two types of iceberg that have been recognized by science, with the name “non-tabular iceberg”.
The other is “tabular iceberg” – or tabular iceberg, which is more of a rectangular shape. They are large ice sheets with a flat top, almost vertical edges, often detached from permafrost shelves.
According to Kelly Brunt – a geography expert from the University of Maryland (USA), the process of creating a tabular tape can be imagined as if your fingernails grow too long and break. When the ice shelf breaks, it forms an ice sheet with neat, straight lines and looks very flat.
In particular, these tabular ice blocks can be very large, with an area of hundreds, even thousands of square kilometers. Like the largest iceberg in history, when received, it has reached the number of over 11,000 square kilometers.
Brunt said the iceberg in the NASA image is a new iceberg, so the area has not been announced. And because it’s a new iceberg, the contours are still very “standard” – because the sea and wind have not had time to affect it. Based on the images, it is also unlikely to reach the record size above.
Also, maybe the actual iceberg is not so perfect as the photo. Maybe the other end of the iceberg is also jagged and unbalanced, and if viewed in its entirety, it wouldn’t surprise netizens.
