Boa Hancock’s Hito Hito no Mi is an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit, but some fans think it has the potential to be even stronger.
Boa Hancock is one of the strongest characters in One Piece. Her threat level can be gauged by observing how the World Government has treated her. Just after her first voyage, Boa Hancock amassed a bounty of 80 million berries. The authorities wasted no time in sending her an invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
While Boa does not like to follow orders, accepting the offer to join the Warlords would help keep Amazon Lily safe from the threat of the Navy. Toward the end of the Wano Country arc, Blackbeard came to Amazon Lily to get his hands on Hancock’s devil fruit. This came as a surprise to One Piece fans because he is not someone who makes a move unless there is some kind of special reason. So, is there more to Hancock’s Mero Mero no Mi than meets the eye?
Boa’s Horrendous Past
When she was just a child, Boa Hancock and her sisters traveled with the Kuja pirates. Unfortunately, the three sisters were taken away by another group of pirates and sold to an auction house. Ultimately, the three sisters ended up in Marijoa as the slaves of the Celestial Dragons. During their time in Marijoa, the three sisters were forcibly fed devil fruits. The Celestial Dragons wanted the sisters to use these devil fruits to entertain them.
The future seemed bleak for the sisters until one day Fisher Tiger infiltrated Marijoa and freed all the slaves. The sisters made their way back to Amazon Lily, where they made up stories to cover up their embarrassment. The women of Amazon Lily had never seen devil fruits before, and they considered them odd. Hancock and her sisters started the rumor that they had gained these abilities after slaying a gorgon, which led the people to call them the Gorgon Sisters. This is an important detail that the fans tend to overlook.
Connected To Greek Mythology
The gorgons are found in Greek mythology, and over the years they have been popularized by various books and games. In Greek mythology, there are three gorgons—Euryale, Stheno, and Medusa. Out of the three Medusa is the most famous. The legend of Medusa is quite saddening. Medusa was a woman who served in the temple of Athena.
Sadly, the eyes of Poseidon fell on her, and he decided to court her. When his attempt failed, he violated her inside the temple. Medusa begged Athena to help her, but the latter did something unthinkable. Instead of punishing Poseidon, Athena was angry at Medusa and held the poor mortal responsible for the desecration. It was definitely a cruel thing to do, but this is not the only instance where the Greek gods and goddesses have made a bizarre decision.
Athena’s punishment for Medusa was to turn her hair into snakes and whoever made eye contact with her to be turned into stone. Unlike her two sisters, Medusa was not immortal, which made it possible for Perseus to behead her. The backstory is important as it is connected to Boa Hancock.
It seems that the Pirate Empress and Medusa have a few things in common. Both of them have sad backstories. They were given their powers against their will. Also, the two of them are different from their sisters in certain ways. In Medusa’s case, she was the only mortal, and in Hancock’s case, she is the only one who cannot transform into a snake. If one were to look carefully at the Boa Sisters, it certainly seems odd that only Hancock is unable to transform into a snake.
Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Medusa
While it may seem a bit far-fetched that Boa Hancock’s devil fruit might be Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Medusa, it ties in quite perfectly with what has transpired in the story so far. Blackbeard wouldn’t go out of his way to seek the devil fruit unless there was some secret behind it. Likewise, it would be odd if one of the three Gorgon Sisters could not transform into something related to the mythological characters.
This is further exemplified by Luffy’s lack of awareness that his devil fruit was a mythical zoan, which he didn’t realize until he awakened it. It is possible that Boa might not have awakened her devil fruit, or maybe she has awakened it but just hasn’t gotten the opportunity to use it. The World Government is known for having some of the most powerful devil fruits in the entire series. The Celestial Dragons responsible for feeding the three sisters were probably under the impression that they could never escape from the Holy Land. So they wouldn’t care if they accidentally fed an overpowered devil fruit to a slave.
Fans have already seen Oda add more information to a character even after several arcs, which is why it is perfectly plausible to assume that Hancock’s devil fruit ability is far superior then what it is made out to be.
When Luffy awakened his devil fruit, his appearance was highly altered, so if Hancock does have a mythical zoan, it is possible she might turn into Medusa. According to mythology, Medusa was a very beautiful woman before she was turned into a gorgon. Likewise, Hancock is considered to be the most beautiful woman in the entire world, and if she turns into Medusa, she wouldn’t be as good-looking. However, it shouldn’t make a big difference to her power considering that Medusa could turn any person to stone if they looked into her eyes. It would be interesting if Hancock does have a mythical zoan, as it would increase her power by a significant amount.
