Margot Robbie praised for embodying ‘golden age of Hollywood’ for her performance in Babylon

Babylon fan has praised Margot Robbie for embodying the ‘golden age of Hollywood’ in her performance in the new comedy-drama.

Glitz, glamour and a whole lot of parties – that’s what springs to mind for me when I think of old Hollywood, and that’s exactly what Babylon delivers as it takes us back to the roaring ’20s.

The movie stars Robbie alongside Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Olivia Wilde, Jean Smart and more as we follow multiple characters throughout their lives in California.

Far from her poised and perfect role in the upcoming Barbie movie, in Babylon Robbie takes on the character of Nellie LaRoy, an unknown actor who’s determined to be anything but, and who apparently plans to party her way to the top.

Her performance has been celebrated by viewers who have already seen the film, which was released in the US last month but isn’t set to hit cinemas in the UK until 20 January.

Responding to a movie fan who hasn’t yet seen Babylon, one viewer wrote: “Babylon is going to blow your mind, especially if you are already hip to the pre-code Hollywood ‘happenings’ — which says a lot. You’re going to love it. Margot Robbie is so beyond cool poise. She embodies the golden age of Hollywood.”

Many fans have gone as far as to suggest Robbie should be nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the comedy, with one commenting: “Margot Robbie deserves an Oscar and every award in the world for her performance as Nellie LaRoy in Babylon. She was phenomenal and even those who didn’t like the movie say Robbie was great. No one can deny she is pure talent!”

Another commented: “it’ll be a miscarriage of justice if Margot Robbie doesn’t get the Oscar nomination she deserves for Babylon.”

While Robbie’s performance is obviously the result of a lot of hard work, she has revealed she took inspiration for the role from a slightly bizarre source – animals.

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, she told the host she associates all of her characters with animals, but that Nellie in particular was an ‘octopus’ and a ‘honey badger’.

She chose the latter because Nellie is ‘very thick skinned’ and ‘fights anything and anyone at the drop of a hat’, adding that it is important ‘to adopt animal characteristics to get into a role’.

We’ll just have to wait and see whether the people who give out Oscars decide to reward Robbie for her performance, but I can only hope that if they do, she uses her speech to thank honey badgers everywhere.
