All eyes are on the 80th edition of the Golden Globes Awards. After a year of hiatus due to some pretty damning investigations which revealed an alarming lack of inclusivity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organisation behind the awards), the iconic award show is back on the small screens.
Golden Globes Or Boys Only Club?
This year was marked by another round of glaring omissions. Despite many able contenders like Sarah Polley (‘Women Talking’), Gina Prince-Bythewood (‘The Woman King’) and Chinonye Chukwu (‘Till’), not a single woman was nominated for the best director category. The nomination list for best director was an unapologetically male, consisting of James Cameron (‘Avatar: The Way of Water’), The Daniels (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’), Baz Luhrmann (‘Elv ..
No Takers For Tom
Although he single-handedly saved Hollywood from a dry spell with his humongous hit ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (the much-awaited sequel to the 1986 blockbuster ‘Top Gun’ which grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide), Tom Cruise, the perpetual golden boy of Hollywood was passed over for a nomination in the category of best performance by an actor in a motion picture-drama. The movie however grabbed nominations for best picture, best song (Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’), and best drama.
‘Will’ Power Fails To Charm Golden Globes
His tear-feel eyes perfectly encapsulated the trauma and the sheer indignity of being enslaved. But Will Smith’s powerful performance as Peter, a rebellious slave who escapes from a Louisiana plantation in the 1860s (for the historical drama ‘Emancipation’), couldn’t land him a Golden Globes nomination this year. In hindsight, this snub may have to do with that infamous slap incident at the 2022 Academy Awards.
Hazza Fails To Strike Goldharry styles
He may be the ‘it’ boy of the English-speaking music industry, landing not less than six Grammy nominations this year, but Harry Styles failed to bag a nomination both for best actor as well as best-supporting actor, despite putting up rather impressive performances as the controlling and chaotic husband in ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ as well as a swoon-worthy (and closeted) policeman in ‘My Policeman’
No Amount Of ‘Hustle’ Could Give Adam Sandler A Golden Globe Nom
Although Adam Sandler delivered a riveting performance as a no-nonsense NBA scout in the sports drama ‘Hustle’, he was still blindsided by the Golden Globes.
JLaw Got Ignored
Ouch! Once touted as the ‘it-girl’ of Hollywood, Jennifer Lawrence was royally snubbed by the Golden Globes. Although her performance as Lynsey, a soldier recovering from a traumatic brain injury in the psychological drama ‘Causeway’ received a standing ovation from critics, it was clearly not deemed ‘golden enough’ for a nomination.
No Luck For Tom Hanks
The 2023 Golden Globes have clearly not been kind to the Toms. After Tom Cruise failed to land a Golden Globe, it was the turn of the other Tom to get blindsided. Even though he was delightful as Otto Anderson, a grumpy, stick-in-the-mud senior citizen in the comedy-drama, ‘A Man Called Otto’, he was still passed over for any nominations.
Jason Bateman Returned Empty Handed
Bateman was impeccable as Marty Byrde, a charismatic and smooth-talking corrupt financial consultant who gets involved in one money-laundering scheme after another. But that didn’t land him a position in the coveted nomination list.
Tim McGraw Gets Sidelined
The country singer-actor was denied a nod for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a limited series, anthology series, or motion picture made for television, even after delivering a career-best performance as James Dutton, a gutsy soldier turned ranch owner in the period drama series, ‘1883
