Even the most die-hard One Piece fans get these facts wrong.
Being one of the most complex long-running shonen series of all time, One Piece is full of intricate plot elements and complicated lore details. The vastness of its world is something many people cite as the reason behind their love for the series.
Fans lose themselves in exploring the show’s countless mysteries, learning about its infinite number of heroes, and constructing elaborate theories. However, it’s easy to misinterpret One Piece’s more confusing story bits. Due to translation issues, contradictions within the story, or widely spread misinformation, even the most dedicated fans can get these things about One Piece wrong.
10. Laugh Tale Can’t Be Reached With Just Three Road Poneglyphs
The biggest mystery in One Piece is hidden on the last island of the Grand Line, the legendary Laugh Tale. The only way to reach this enigmatic location is by finding all four Road Poneglyphs. However, many fans falsely believe that the Straw Hats can connect the island’s coordinates with just three of them.
With what fans know of the Road Poneglyphs so far, all four of them are necessary to reach Laugh Tale with certainty, considering how unpredictable and difficult to navigate the Grand Line gets.
9. Zoro And Sanji Don’t Actually Hate Each Other
Luffy’s strongest and most loyal nakama, Zoro and Sanji, infamously don’t get along. The two constantly bicker and get into petty fights despite sailing together for so long. Their rocky relationship led many fans to assume that Zoro and Sanji must hate each other, their rivalry tied to their fundamentally different values and philosophies.
However, these fans miss how much Zoro and Sanji actually care for one another, willing to sacrifice their lives for each other without question. Their need to butt heads doesn’t make their friendship any less sincere.
8. It’s Never Confirmed That Shanks’ Crew Doesn’t Have Any Devil Fruit Users
Many popular One Piece fan theories are supported by strong evidence. However, some fans mistake these speculations for facts, which is often not the case. One such theory revolves around Shanks, the only Yonkou who doesn’t possess Devil Fruit powers, and his crew. Many fans wrongly assume that none of the Red Hair Pirates have Devil Fruits.
No matter how believable this theory may sound, it was never confirmed. The Red Hair Pirates remain one of the most enigmatic crews in the series, and they might as well have unknown Devil Fruit abilities.
7. One Piece Didn’t Officially Enter Its Final Saga
After the conclusion of the Wano Country Saga, the One Piece staff announced that the story would be entering its final saga, leading to speculations among the fan community. Many fans assumed that the word “saga” was used in a similar context to the East Blue Saga or the Alabasta Saga, referring to the official final portion of the story.
However, the statement referred to a saga in a generalized sense, alluding to One Piece entering its last story segment and not announcing the Final Saga officially.
6. Bounties In One Piece Don’t Correlate With Strength
Most battle shonen series use easy-to-follow power scaling systems to allow fans to visualize and compare the characters’ strengths. Many fans falsely tie the power of One Piece characters to their bounties.
However, the price on their head often has little to do with how physically formidable a pirate is, simply indicating their worth to the World Government. As such, Nico Robin had a bounty of 79,000,000 berries at the age of eight, while Chopper’s highest bounty is just 1,000 despite his chilling strength and fighting potential.
5. Monkey D. Dragon Isn’t The Most Wanted Man In The World
Due to the One Piece fans’ obsession with bounties and the mysteries surrounding the series’ most formidable criminals, many have speculated who might be the most wanted man in the eyes of the World Government. Most fans falsely believe that Monkey D. Dragon of the Revolutionary Army holds that title.
This assumption stems from a popular mistranslation of his alias as the Most Wanted Man in the World. In reality, Dragon’s title is closer to the World’s Worst Criminal, so no one can claim that he actually has the highest bounty.
4. Tashigi And Kuina Aren’t The Same Character
The Marine Officer Tashigi bears a lot of similarity to a significant character from Zoro’s past, his childhood friend and rival Kuina. This uncanny likeness even freaks out the future Greatest Swordsman, leading many fans to assume that Tashigi and Kuina must be the same character, or at the very least related.
This popular fan misconception is false, as Kuina’s death is confirmed. The two have different birthdays and birth years and bear no resemblance to each other as kids, making any link between the two highly unlikely.
3. The Real Alias Of Mr. 2 Bentham Is Bon Kurei, Not Bon Clay
Translational issues are common in anime and manga, and One Piece is no exception. One of the most common mistranslations concerns the real name of one of the series’ most beloved side characters, Baroque Works Mr. 2. Most fans know the eccentric okama as Bon Clay.
However, his real alias is Bon Kurei, which is how his name is written in the original manga. Keeping with the spirit of other Baroque Works namesakes, Bon Kurei refers to a Japanese festival that honors the spirits of one’s ancestors.
2. Zoro Doesn’t Hold The Title Of The Straw Hats’ First Mate
The first man to join Luffy on his quest to conquer the Grand Line and become the Pirate King, Roronoa Zoro, is often cited as the Straw Hats’ First Mate, the top pirate on the crew right below the captain.
However, Zoro has never been referred to as such in the series, his role on the ship being that of a combatant. The Straw Hat Pirates don’t have a First Mate. Despite Zoro’s respected status in the crew, he doesn’t hold the official vice-captain title.
1. Eiichiro Oda Didn’t Have The Entirety Of One Piece Planned From The Beginning
One Piece fans have immense faith in the series creator Eiichiro Oda, who has proven to be one of the most prolific and talented manga authors in history. However, some fans believe he had the entire story up to minute details planned from the beginning.
No matter how gifted an author might be, a story of One Piece’s length and magnitude is bound to change along the way. While Oda stated that he knew the ending of One Piece from the start, other details, like the entire Supernova plotline, came about accidentally.
