United could have moved level on points with second-place Manchester City in the Premier League if they had won at Old Trafford.

But they slipped up against a determined Leeds side, who were unlucky to come away with just a point.

Leeds took the lead in the opening minute through Wilfried Gnonto before an own goal from Raphael Varane doubled the visitors’ lead shortly after the break.

Marcus Rashford pulled one back for United with his 20th goal of the season, before second-half substitute Jadon Sancho equalised for the home side.

United were unable to find a winner in the closing stages of the match are had to settle for a draw, with the two teams meeting again at Elland Road on Sunday.

During the match, BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone spotted United manager Ten Hag losing his cool with Fred, who had started alongside Marcel Sabitzer in midfield – with Casemiro currently suspended.

Stone tweeted: “Erik ten Hag furious at Fred.

“Throws his chewing gum on the ground, then demands more noise from the Stretford End.”

After the match, Ten Hag branded his side’s start to the game as “unacceptable”.

“You have to be ready to fight and we weren’t ready for the battle,” he said.

“It looked like it [his players were not ready] but not me. We knew they will go aggressive, front foot, against a team on a good run, they’ll try to get into duels and that’s what they did.

“I start my talk at half time with: ‘Guys we are not ready in the first half, make sure you are this time.’ And then we go out and concede again. I am disappointed we lose all the battles in the first minutes of each half.”

United missed the chance to move to within five points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

They are now seven points behind the Gunners, having played two games more.
