Ten Hag worried because the team is exhausted, 3 stars risk not being able to “play” with Barca in time

Manchester United are likely to be without Antony, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial for their Europa League clash with Barcelona next week.

United were without the trio for their midweek draw against Leeds United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Antony was ruled out due to a leg injury while Martial is now struggling with a hip problem having only just returned after a seven game absence off the bench against Nottingham Forest last Wednesday.

McTominay meanwhile has an unspecified knock having not featured since the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal on 22 January.

United travel to Elland Road for a second meeting with Leeds on Sunday with the trio considered major doubts. Erik ten Hag also fears they will miss out when his side travel to the Camp Nou on Thursday for the first leg of their Europa League play-off.

‘I don’t expect [them to be fit]. We have some days obviously, but I don’t expect it,’ ten Hag told a press conference on Friday.

‘If I can oversee it from now, I don’t see any new problems coming up.’

On their availability for the Barcelona game, he added: ‘I think same answer, I can’t say for 100 percent, but I don’t expect it.’

United will again be without Casemiro, who will serve the second of a three-match ban following his straight red card against Crystal Palace. Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek are also long-term absentees.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka meanwhile missed Wednesday’s 2-2 draw through illness.

‘With the injuries, if you see Christian Eriksen, you can’t see that as an impact from the tough season, but it definitely is a tough season with the World Cup in between and a lot of overload for the players,’ ten Hag added.

‘That process is already longer term, going on that the load on the players is too much.’

After games against Leeds and Barcelona, United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford before the La Liga leaders come to town for the reverse fixture. Ten Hag’s side end the month at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United on 26 February.
