The agent of a Manchester United stalwart has reportedly offered him to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.
David de Gea is coming to the end of his contract at Old Trafford and will be a free agent in the summer, with his agent Jorgen Mendes said to be trying to negotiate a return to Spain for his client.
The Spanish report claims De Gea is currently weighing up his options but that he is open to returning to the club he quit to join United over a decade ago.
And with the 32-year-old continually being linked with an exit, United are known to be on the hunt for a new No.1 – with Porto star Diogo Costa their top target.
However, reports of Mendes looking to secure De Gea’s exit are in stark contract to recent suggestions over the player’s future.
A report in The Sun on Sunday claimed that Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag wants to keep De Gea and offer him a new contract.
United are said to be willing to stretch to a £250,000-per-week wage to keep David de Gea at Old Trafford.
The player’s current deal is set at £375,000-per-week, which is due to expire at the end of the season, so he will still need to accept a pay cut to remain with United.
De Gea having growing presence under Ten Hag
This new, reported offer is somewhat unexpected, given Ten Hag introduced a rule this season that no United player could earn more than £200,000 per week.
However, the fact that Dutchman is willing to compromise to keep De Gea at the club, shows how important he is to the team.
The Spaniard excelled again in United’s latest triumph, a 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday.
De Gea made a stunning stop to deny Harvey Barnes giving the Foxes the lead, with United thankful to a brace from Marcus Rashford and a Jadon Sancho strike for keeping them in the Premier League title race.
At this stage, it appears more likely that De Gea will extend his United stay than leave. To that end, it gives Ten Hag continuity in one of the most important positions in his team and will allow the Red Devils chief to build a team around the former Atletico man.
Exclusive: Man United close to breakthrough in new contract talks
Man United are confident of securing right-back Diogo Dalot to a new deal, sources have told Football Insider.
Sources with knowledge of the 23-year-old’s situation have revealed that contract talks are progressing well and a breakthrough is close.
This news comes amid reports from Spanish media – which suggest Real Madrid are plotting a move for the Portugal international as they eye a long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal.
Man United activated the one-year extension clause in Dalot’s contract late last year in order to safeguard his transfer value.
However, Los Blancos remain interested in the former Porto ace – who will have 12 months left to run on his deal at the end of the season.
Dalot reportedly earns a weekly wage of £25,000 at Old Trafford following his arrival from Portugal in 2018.
The right-back has been a key figure for Erik ten Hag’s side this season, making 26 appearances across all competitions – all but one of which has come as a starter.
He has recovered from a shaky start to his start to life at Old Trafford – which saw him shipped out on loan to AC Milan for the 2020-21 season after a lack of game time in Manchester.
Dalot managed to displace Bayern Munich loanee Joao Cancelo in the Portugal side at the World Cup last year – and has made 10 appearances in total for his country.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is in a similar position to his fellow right-back, with the former England Under-21 international also out of contract in 2024.
However, sources told this site on 11 February that Man United are willing to sell Wan-Bissaka despite his recent impressive performances.
Ten Hag’s side are next in action against Barcelona in the Europa League playoff round following a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou last week (16 February).
