The Dallas Cowboys‘ facelift continues as another of the homegrown stars leave by way of this monster we call the NFL free-agency frenzy (though the frenzied position may be in our rearview mirror). This time the Houston Texans poach the Cowboys’ roster and land tight end Dalton Schultz just one day after it was announced that America’s Team hand dealt a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round pick to acquire wide receiver, Brandin Cooks.
Multiple sources including NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport confirmed the story. It’s officially Jake Ferguson time!
Here’s more on the Dalton Schultz deal and a quick recap of the Cowboys’ recent activity during the first week of the NFL’s new league year.
Dalton Schultz signs a one-year deal that will pay him up to $9 million. The Texans have also added former Buffalo Bills running back Devin Singletary in a subsequent move.
Schultz’s exit follows a decent season… not his best… but decent. He collected 57 receptions for 577 yards and reached the end zone five times, giving him 211 snags, 2,122 receiving yards, and 17 trips to the end zone during his 75 regular-season games that span the past five seasons (2018-2022).
He made 51 starts during that time and appeared in five postseason games, starting each of those while adding 20 receptions, 231 yards, and three scores to the Cowboys’ cause. The Cowboys were above .500 (44-31) during the regular season with him in the lineup.
Here’s a recap of what we’ve seen since we turned the calendar from February to March. The franchise tag was placed on running back Tony Pollard on March 6th. It was announced on March 14th that they had traded a 2023 fifth-round draft choice to the Indianapolis Colts to acquire Stephon Gilmore.
They’ve been equally as busy since the new league year began on March 15th. RB Ezekiel Elliott was released. They agreed to terms with offensive tackle Tyron Smith, re-signed cornerback C.J. Goodwin to a one-year contract, and re-signed quarterback Cooper Rush to a two-year extension. Things are getting interesting as we move through Pro Days towards the NFL Draft.
