This picture was taken a 11 days after they were born, in late August, 2016 at a hospital in St. Petersburg. Lucie, Florida, USA and was the first time the two had touched since leaving the womb, as soon as Mason felt Hawk he reached out for his arm and smiled this big. The photo went viral, attracting a deluge of messages of support from thousands of people who had never met the family.
But now the story of the Buchmeyer twins has taken a sad turn as their parents announced one of their babies had ᴅɪᴇᴅ from a rare congenital condition. Hawk had ᴅɪᴇᴅ from Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia – a hole in the diaphragm that can allow organs to move from the abdomen into the chest. Hawk, who had undergone numerous sᴜʀɢᴇʀɪᴇs since his birth, was being ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴇᴅ at Shands Children’s Hospital at The University of Florida in Gainesville
But the family shared on Facebook that Hawk had ᴅɪᴇᴅ and “was called home to be with Jesus, and that he is no longer sᴜFFᴇʀɪɴɢ. Our hearts were saddened that morning. He went very peacefully and we know he’s no longer sufferin” they wrote on September 7.
Thousands were ᴍᴏᴜʀɴɪɴɢ the d.e.a.t.h of a baby boy who d.i.e.d just days after a photo of the child wrapped in his twin brother’s arms garnered national attention. Hundreds of Facebook users took to the post’s comment section to share condolences and send well wishes to the family.
