Stephen Curry is set to star with Adam Pally in a new mockumentary series for NBC. Deadline reports that the comedy will follow the story of a memorabilia dealer who is looking to revitalize his career by reaching out to his grade-school basketball teammate, who happens to be NBA legend Steph Curry. Mr. Throwback will be in the style of The Office and Parks and Recreation and executive produced by David Caspe, whose co-creator on the series is Adam Pally.
The new series is part of an ongoing deal between Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media and NBCUniversal, a partnership that began in 2021. Unanimous Media is also responsible for such properties as the mini-golf gameshow Holey Moley for ABC and Underrated for Apple. Mr. Throwback will be written by Mattew Libman and Daniel Libman, along with Adam Pally. Pally is known for his recent starring role in 101 Places to Party Before You Die and the forthcoming Arnold Schwarzenegger Netflix series Fubar, not to mention his comedic role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
While Stephen Curry’s performance on the basketball court is his greatest claim to fame, the hoops superstar is no stranger to acting, though he has so far exclusively played himself, including on Ballers, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. (That was, obviously, a different guy called Stephen Curry in Thor: Love and Thunder.) The Libman brothers, meanwhile, are no strangers to series co-creator David Caspe, most recently collaborating with him on Happy Endings, not to mention Kenan, Black Monday, The Mick, Champagne ILL, and Solar Opposites.
Stephen Curry’s credits are largely as a producer on such projects as the HBO Max series About Last Night and shorts like Cancer Alley and The Queen of Basketball. His production company’s global talent partnership with NBCUniversal encompasses first-look development deals with DreamWorks Animation for family and children’s content, alongside unscripted and scripted television for Universal Studio Group. For his part, Caspe recently served as executive producer on the Netflix series Blockbuster, which was itself a “throwback” to the former video rental giant.
We’re excited to see what happens with Stephen Curry’s new series Mr. Throwback as NBC’s history with mockumentary series has been strong, especially bringing the format to prominence in the US with The Office. But Parks and Recreation proved that the niche style has staying power and appeal, even boosting the careers of such stars as Chris Pratt. According to Deadline, both Curry and Erick Peyton, Unanimous Media’s Chief Creative Officer, have expressed enthusiasm about the project, with the former saying they “can’t wait” to see the future of the series, and the latter saying they are “thrilled” to be partnering with NBC and UTV for the new comedic venture.
The collectibles world hasn’t exactly been front and center in scripted television, so it will be interesting to see this niche world explored in a fun, entertaining, and comedic way, and the presence of an NBA superstar will surely draw in viewership from sports fans as well.
