Margot Robbie wasn’t the first choice for the role of Barbie.
In a new interview with Vogue, the Birds of Prey actress, who is set to play the titular role in the upcoming Greta Gerwig’s directorial, revealed that Gal Gadot was the first actor she envisioned in the iconic role.
However, according to the magazine, the Israeli actress “wasn’t available.”
“What exactly is Barbie energy? “Gal Gadot is Barbie energy,” Robbie said.
She went on to rave about the Wonder Woman star being “so impossibly beautiful,” noting that “but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky.”
“It’s like right before being a dork,” she added.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Babylon actress also reflected on the cartoon character being the emblem of sexiness to many, and said: “I’m like, ‘Okay, she’s a doll. She’s a plastic doll. She doesn’t have organs. If she doesn’t have organs, she doesn’t have reproductive organs. If she doesn’t have reproductive organs, would she even feel sexual desire?’ No, I don’t think she could.
“She is sexualized. But she should never be sexy. People can project sex onto her. Yes, she can wear a short skirt, but because it’s fun and pink. Not because she wanted you to see her butt,” Robbie added.
