Three senior Chelsea stars including Mason Mount were savaged by a former Blues defender following the 4-0 defeat to Man City, with calls for change continuing to grow at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea bowed out of the FA Cup following a thumping 4-0 defeat to Man City on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side were unquestionably the favourites in the tie, though few could’ve predicted how easily Chelsea were seen off.
City were three up at the break thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden. A second Mahrez strike, this time from the penalty spot, sealed a 4-0 win late in the second half.
The loss means Chelsea have won just one of their last eight matches across all competitions.
They’re out of both domestic cups and are languishing in 10th position in the Premier League. Barring a remarkable reversal of fortune, the Blues will not be playing in the Champions League next season.
The first-half display in particular against City has proved a lightning rod for criticism. The BBC’s Alan Shearer blasted Chelsea for their lack of energy and desire, and stressed the blame must ultimately fall on manager Graham Potter.
Various reporters, including Ben Jacobs, have claimed Potter is not under any immediate threat.
Nevertheless, his side are copping as much flak as he is and three senior stars have been savaged by former Chelsea defender, Frank Leboeuf.
Speaking to ESPN FC at half-time in the tie, the 1998 World Cup winner tore into Chelsea trio Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Jorginho.
Leboeuf questions what Mount, Havertz actually do
“Shameful, really shameful,” said the ex-Blues centre-half (via the Mirror). “I’ve never seen Chelsea so low in terms of willing.
“They don’t have the will, they don’t have the guts, they don’t have the courage to fight for the colours, they don’t have pride.
“I see players prove nothing, they show disrespect towards the fans and the club.
“I’m talking about the leaders, so-called leaders, I’m not talking about Hall, Chalobah or Humphreys, I’m talking about the players who form the spine, they are shameful, they do nothing.
“I don’t know what Kai Havertz is doing, he’ll be on record for scoring in the Champions League final, but what else?
“Mason, yes, I love him, he’s a guy from the club, but come on, he has to do something.”
“Enough is enough”
Midfield linchpin Jorginho then moved into Leboeuf’s sights.
“I’m not even going to talk about Jorginho,” added Leboeuf. “I don’t know what Jorginho is still doing on the field.
‘I’m very upset with what I’ve seen. I think it’s really disrespectful, they don’t do anything to make sure at least people will be proud.
“Enough is enough, something has to be changed. It’s not the club I know, it’s not the club fighting for Europe and being a champion of Europe, they’re so far away from that right now.”
