Erik ten Hag admitted that Manchester United’s three-goal winning margin over Charlton Athletic was ‘a little over the top’ as they beat the League One club to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
United missed a series of chances at Old Trafford and Antony’s excellent strike was all that separated the two teams until the 90th minute when substitute Marcus Rashford made it 2-0 and then added a third deep into injury-time.
‘We weren’t clinical enough in front of goal,’ said Ten Hag. ‘We need more effectiveness there because we create good chances in the first half hour.
Erik ten Hag admits Man United’s 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic was ‘a little over the top’
‘We should have finished this game earlier on – 3-0 was a little bit over the top. It was a brilliant finish by Antony but I think we should have scored more already. We had to fight for it until the end. I don’t think Charlton created good open chances, but still you never know and we had to fight.
‘You like these players. Kobbie Mainoo, first time debut, did well. (Facundo) Pellistri came in for the first time and did really well and got a good assist for Rashford for 2-0. ‘

Ten Hag wants his side to be more ‘clinical’ earlier on in future outings
Rashford took his total for the season to 15 goals including seven in the last six games since returning from the World Cup. Ten Hag added: ‘I think I have told you many times, when he brings himself into position in the one-on-ones, in the box, he will score, that is what he is doing in this moment. If he keeps the focus and puts the same effort in, then he will continue scoring.’
Diogo Dalot came off with a leg injury in the first half and it’s unclear if he will be available for the derby. Ten Hag was also unable to give a definitive update on Donny van de Beek amid fears his fellow Dutchman has suffered a serious knee injury.
‘I can’t tell that much,’ said the United boss. ‘We have seen Diogo come off but it was a precaution and see how it develops in the coming hours and make a clear decision. Donny, we are doing some final investigations and then when we have that we will update you.’
