Action hero Jason Statham rumoured to be The Masked Singer’s Phoenix

The show has kept viewers guessing

Viewers were left baffled as to who was under the disguises of the remaining performers on ITV’s The Masked Singer last night (Saturday, January 14). Five stars all performed for a second time in the competition, with Martin and Shirlie Kemp being unveiled as ‘Cat and Mouse’ in an epic finale.

But the character who grabbed the attention of viewers in Derbyshire was Phoenix, who performed third on the night, after judge Davina McCall suggested action star Jason Statham – who grew up in Shirebrook – could be hidden under the feathers.

The panel were convinced they are an actor after they said they were ready for a close up and a film clipboard was held up in front of them. But there was a football in the VT, which left fans wondering if the person was once a sporting star and they had gone onto be an actor. Mr Statham was after all a diver turned movie star.

Phoenix’s first performance was a jazz version of “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk, sang with an American accent. The judges loved it, with Jonathan Ross suggesting Doctor Who actor David Tennant, known to be a fan of the show, was behind the mask.

Rita Ora however said that she was “confused” as to Phoenix’s identity and guessed Take That star Jason Orange. Mo Gilligan went for Joe Sugg, as he knew that the YouTuber’s family had survived the Great Fire of London as described in an episode of Who Do You Think You Are.

Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall was also put forward as a possibility by the comedian based on Phoenix’s rouge hair colour.

Their latest appearance in the episode on Saturday, saw Phoenix perform Loco in Acapulco by The Four Tops. They said: “For my first performance, I set the stage on fire. But the panel weren’t so lucky with my name. OK I’m ready for my close-up, shall we begin?”

The two Clue or False prompts read: “It would have been sweet to converse with a person passed” and “Time travel? I’ve completed it, my good man.”

The Masked Singer airs Saturdays at 7pm on ITV.
