The spacecraft-killing anomaly over the South Atlantic A strange dent in Earth’s magnetic field doses orbiting craft with high levels of radiation. It’s caused everything from periodic glitches to total mission failure. The European Space Agency’s Swarm satellites measure the strength of Earth’s magnetic field. In this image, cooler colors (blue) mean lower strength than warmer colors (pink). The large dark region is called the South Atlantic Anomaly. Radiation is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless enemy to both humans and electronics alike. And, thanks to a quirk in Earth’s magnetic field, a region called the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) regularly…
The Sun’s death could mean new life in the outer solar system What will happen to the solar system when the Sun dies? It might be the end of planet Earth, but life could still find a way. The future red giant sun bakes planet Earth. In roughly 5 billion years, the Sun will run out of energy and drastically alter the solar system. Oceans will be baked dry. Entire planets will be consumed. And long-icy worlds will finally enjoy their day in the Sun. Our star is powered by nuclear fusion, and it turns hydrogen into helium in a…

When it comes to looks in the birding world, males definitely steal the show. Though some pairs—American robins, house wrens and blue jays, for instance—look alike, most male birds outshine their female counterparts with bright, beautiful plumage. But don’t let the female’s drabness fool you. She’s the one that makes all the important decisions when it comes to bird mating. In short, she’s the boss! Female Robins Take Charge There’s no doubt that female birds take the lead, especially during bird mating and nesting season. This is true of nearly every backyard bird species, from rose-breasted grosbeaks to northern cardinals, scarlet tanagers and Baltimore orioles. Even…
Archeologists find 60 Roman British skeletons buried in a field On the site of a Roman cemetery in Lincolnshire, archeologists found the remains of 60 human burials. Men, women and children were discovered and a tomb even included a lamb leg for the deceased to take them to the afterlife. Grave goods found by Lincoln-based Allen Archaeology also include pots, bracelets, and bangles. The burials are believed to date from the 2nd to the 4th century AD and some were in coffins and others wrapped in shrouds. Three Roman villas or farmsteads have previously been found near the dig site…
Gliese 876 d, seen here in this artist’s concept, was the first super-Earth discovered around a main-sequence star. The Neptune-like planet orbits a red dwarf star some 15 light-years from Earth. There are countless worlds beyond our own in the universe’s vast expanse. And among the most intriguing are super-Earths, a type of exoplanet that has captured the attention of scientists and stargazers alike since their initial discovery more than a decade ago. Super-Earths are defined as planets larger in size than Earth but smaller than Neptune. “The term ‘super-Earths’ is simply referring to the radius of the planet, and typically refers to something in…
One of geology’s basic principles is that the Earth is made up of four layers: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. But this may be squashed in light of a new study that suggests Earth actually has a distinct fifth layer that’s been under our feet all along. Researchers at the Australian National University (ANU) say that the new layer they uncovered is located within Earth’s inner core. Deeper analysis of this discovery could help scientists better understand our planet’s history and evolution. A peek inside EarthApproximately 4.6 billion years ago, the Earth formed. The story starts with the…

Plenty of really hot things exist in the universe. But do we know of fire anywhere besides on our planet? NASA’s Galileo spacecraft saw shimmering, fresh lava in Io’s Tvashtar Catena back in 2000. Jupiter’s volcano moon holds the closest thing to earthly fire in our solar system. Plenty of really hot things exist in the universe. But do we know of fire anywhere besides on our planet?Tom MalkochPlymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania Fire has occurred here on Earth for millions of years and was harnessed by humans more than 100,000 years ago. But like humans, fire requires free oxygen — molecular…

Data from NASA’s Magellan spacecraft show evidence of an eruption that occurred during the mission. The volcano Maat Mons is shown in a 3D model based on data from NASA’s Magellan data. The elevation has been exaggerated but a factor of 10 to better show terrain detail As both NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) plan missions to Venus, scientists are continuing to learn about our sister planet — including volcanic activity that may be occurring in the present day. Venus’ landscape is littered with volcanoes that were clearly active in the past. But whether any are still erupting…
For years, astronomers have been detecting incredibly powerful pulses from the cosmos, without a confirmed source. Recent advances in astronomy are getting us closer to the solution. We have just published evidence in Nature Astronomy for what might be producing mysterious bursts of radio waves coming from distant galaxies, known as fast radio bursts or FRBs. Two colliding neutron stars — each the super-dense core of an exploded star — produced a burst of gravitational waves when they merged into a “supramassive” neutron star. We found that two and a half hours later they produced an FRB when the neutron star collapsed into a black hole. Or so…
Something terrible happened on Sweden’s Öland Island about 1,600 years ago. It was so bad that after an attack on a small fort there the site was taboo for years. Possibly hundreds of people were killed in an attack on the fort, called Sandby borg, their unburied bodies left to rot, some with sheep and goats’ teeth stuffed in their mouths. The people of the village had some wealth in the form of gold and silver jewelry and gold coins. Archaeologists think that the site wasn’t looted until 2010, when people with metal detectors began digging around. In 2010 , archaeologists…
Researchers used an aerial quadcopter to help count the massive penguin breeding colony. (Image credit: Thomas Sayre McChord, Hanumant Singh, Northeastern University, © Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) Explorers beware: The Danger Islands — a remote handful of rocks huddled among sheets of treacherous sea ice near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula — are full of penguins. One might not imagine penguins to be dangerous per se, but then again, one has probably never seen (or smelled) 1.5 million of them breeding at once. According to a new paper published today (March 2) in the journal Scientific Reports(opens in new tab), that’s about…

A colony of 1,000 breeding pairs of African penguins nests on the beaches and in the gardens of Simon’s Town It’s a warm, sunny afternoon in mid-May when I step on to the white sand beach in Simon’s Town, a dramatically picturesque spot 25 miles outside of Cape Town, South Africa. Giant granite rocks rise up from the sheltered cove’s seafoam green water, lending the beach its moniker: Boulders Beach. The first living beings I spot are a pair of African penguins perched companionably atop one of the large boulders. While one is preening, the other appears to be standing…
On the south-eastern island of Oland, Swedish archeologists found evidence of a massacre of the 5th century. The team writes about the 1,500-year-old attack on Sandby borg in a paper published in the journal Antiquity. Dozens of corpses have been found in the walled fort, their bodies left to rot where they fell. All of the victims were killed with “brutal force”, team leader Helena Victor said. Some victims were found inside houses, others in the streets. The archaeologists discovered decapitated bodies, blunt force trauma wounds to victims’ heads, and even one person who seemed to have fallen into a…
